Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows,is a sweeping epic film and at times I thought I was watching a 007 picture. What worked in the film, where there were many flaws in the novel, was the scenes that were discussed but not shown. The opening of the film begins with the new minister of magic,Rufus Scrimgeour, played by Bill Nighy and he basically sets the dark tone of the film. He tells the press that dark times are head and that is the central theme throughout the seventh story. Another poignant scene in the opening,is Hermione erasing her parents memories. It was discussed in the book and we knew it was a heartbreaking decision for her to make. However seeing onscreen made it that much more heartbreaking. Harry knows that his mission is to destroy the horcruxes and he and his best friends Hermione and Ron set out with him on the quest. The mission takes an emotional toll on the trio as it does in the book and I thought this was Rupert Grint's finest performance to date in the series. He portrayed all of Ron's insecurities perfectly and still remained the comic relief in the group. The ending to this first half willl leave the audience wanting to return for the finale, which we'll have to wait for next summer.
I was reluctant at first when I heard they were going to split the seventh novel in half, but after seeing it,I don't see any other way they could have done it. Several changes in the script also made this film (for me) better than the novel, because there are some plot points that need to be shown instead of discussed. There was one huge scene that was changed, which I won't give away, but I was pleased that the dialouge from the book was not kept in the film. If they had kept the dialouge,it would have contridicted a previous scene before it. David Yates seemed to struggle with the material in the first two films he made-Order of the Phoenix and Half-Blood Prince. Here he has the opportunity to show as much of the book as possible and elminate the unecessary sub-plots. Since the film is very dark and has some adult themes,I would recommend this film for those that have read the book and grown up with the series, but there are cetain scenes that are quite terrifying for younger children. It's definitely worth seeing many times if you missed anything in the first viewing.
